WE ENVISION A WORLD WHERE WOMEN LIVE THEIR

LIVES FREE FROM VIOLENCE AND EQUAL HUMAN RIGHTS

OVERVIEW

WATCH OUR PROGRAMME VIDEO

We envision a world where women have the rights, capacity and opportunity to live their lives free from violence and enjoy their full and equal human rights. We aim to achieve this ambitious goal by addressing violence against women and supporting movement building.

We believe that strong women’s movements are key to creating and sustaining social, cultural and political change. When women are empowered – individually and collectively – they are equipped to challenge patriarchal norms, tackle the root causes of inequality and prevent and respond to violence. Therefore, we invest in the people, organisations and networks that build these movements.

Katharina Samara-Wickrama is the new director for our Issues Affecting Women Programme. In this video she talks about the grant-making strategy of the programme.

The Issues Affecting Women Programme provides primarily core support grants and capacity development support to organisations worldwide. We also connect people, networks and organisations. This ensures that women are visible, able to exercise their influence and contribute to making systemic change. We also engage with other donors and philanthropic actors to leverage more and better funding to advance women’s rights around the world.

Our Priorities

We believe that movement building is key to long-lasting change. To this end, we support organisations that:

  • build capacities, strengthen women’s leadership and ensure adequate financial resources;
  • create and maintain safe spaces so that feminist agendas and perspectives are amplified and become more influential;
  • support the creation and dissemination of knowledge to generate shared agendas and support evidence-based advocacy;
  • strengthen connections, cooperation and collaboration within the women’s rights sector and with other movements; and
  • support increased mobilisation to strengthen the base, build collective and generate support across other movements (e.g., environment, health, etc.).

We also support organisations that enable women who have experienced violence to access their rights and rebuild their lives. Our partners provide a range of services that empower women to recover from the trauma of violence. They also seek to reform laws and policies and change norms to prevent violence from taking place. To this end, we support organisations which address physical, psychological and sexual violence against women:

- in the home – (domestic violence);

- at work and in migration – (trafficking and exploitation); and

- in situations of crisis.

OUR STRATEGY

OUR FUNDING PRINCIPLES

We support women’s organisations and groups that:

  • adopt a rights-based approach to services and advocacy;

  • empower women to fully and equally participate in society;

  • adopt a holistic approach, taking into consideration various contexts and cultures, and addressing root causes;

  • promote systemic change by strengthening legal frameworks and holding governments and institutions to account;

  • contribute to the broader women’s movement by complementing individual and community action with networking and joint advocacy initiatives;

  • build evidence that contributes to best practices and catalyses innovation; and

  • work to change behaviour and attitudes to prevent violence.

In 2017 the Issues Affecting Women Programme made 29 grants totalling USD 18.20 million.
