Helping to transform how society uses single use plastics

The #breakfreefromplastic movement is growing, and several of our partners are contributing to the shift in how single-use plastics are being used around the world. Read on to learn more about some of their approaches and achievements.

Overview

We all want to live in places where our families can breathe clean air, drink safe water, and build a better life. But today, rising temperatures and pollution are putting that future at risk. Fortunately, we already have many of the tools to turn things around.

The Global Climate Initiatives Programme supports practical, people-first solutions that help communities thrive while reducing the harm caused by pollution and overuse of natural resources. Whether it’s switching to cleaner energy, cutting waste, or improving how we grow and share food, we support efforts that focus on changes that make life better now — and protect what matters for the future.

We believe that by working together — across borders, sectors, and communities — we can build a future that’s not only cleaner, but also fairer and more secure for everyone.

What we fund

We support efforts that make clean energy more accessible, affordable, and fair. This includes improving power, transport, and buildings in ways that protect health, lower bills, and create jobs — especially in places where the need is greatest.

Where we fund: Africa, Asia, India, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Brazil.

We support solutions that reduce plastic waste and pollution. By cutting unnecessary single-use items and safeguarding communities from the impacts of excessive plastics and petrochemical use, we can have cleaner rivers and oceans, and we can make the food we eat safer for our health.

Where we fund: Global

We support food practices that nourish people and protect the planet — encouraging healthy diets, fair livelihoods, and farming practices that care for nature and reduce waste.

Where we fund: Europe
