FACTS & FIGURES

  • As a sector, Education spends <0.25% on R&D, compared to most sectors that spend 5-6%.

  • In Transcend’s pilot project with the Achievement First: Greenfield model, 93% of kindergarteners scored proficient or above in reading, and 95% of parents demonstrated school engagement.

“In most classrooms, the teacher is the hardest-working person in the room. Teachers instruct, monitor, encourage, redirect and try to keep all children engaged in their learning.  Just adding technology does not make a teacher’s job easier, nor will it automatically personalise learning for every student.”

– Aylon Samouha, Co-Founder of Transcend

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What have you accomplished through your Oak-funded programme that you’re most proud to share with your colleagues?

We have partnered with 16 diverse and visionary school operators from across the country (district, charter, and independent school networks) to develop, codify, and spread breakthrough new school models. Critical to each of these new model designs is how we personalize learning for each student - as all students learn differently regardless of whether or not they have been formally identified with learning differences. In addition, we have recently released version 1.0 of our Learning Agenda - a document that highlights the most pressing challenges faced by those pursuing innovative learning environments

What’s the most interesting challenge your Oak-funded programme currently faces?

As we have mapped the R&D Journey for School Innovation, and engaged deeper in discussions with potential school operators, we discovered that our original plan of starting all projects at the “dream & discover” phase may not be the most efficient or effective way to get to our goal of 10-15 breakthrough school models within the next 5 years. Instead, we have decided to pilot engaging with school partners in any step along the R&D Journey - to advance the work in the most high-impact ways. Opening up this frame also encouraged us to take on the Transcend + NewSchools Collaborative - to aim to spread the R&D capacity of Transcend across more operators at one time, in a lighter fashion, and also develop a community of visionary leaders as a powerful resource.

Transcend accelerates innovation in school model design to far better prepare students and society for the 21st century. Its grant for core support is helping the organisation explore, develop, codify, and spread new school models that better serve diverse learners’ needs.

Promoting serious investment in research and development to help new schools cultivate true innovation

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Transcend is a national nonprofit dedicated to accelerating innovation in the core design of “school.” It does so in three ways:

  • By building and spreading innovative school models in partnership with visionary school communities.
  • By deploying a diverse force of R&D talent, called the Yellow Hats League, to develop, codify and spread these new learning models.
  • By building and sharing actionable knowledge to inform the innovation process with evidence-based insights.

Transcend provides research and development (R&D) capacity to schools across the district, charter, and independent school sectors.

ABOUT THE OAK FUNDED  PROJECT

With Oak’s support, Transcend is fostering the creation and adoption of new school models that generate strong academic and social-emotional outcomes for all students, especially those who learn differently. Transcend is currently engaged in five school innovation projects working with 16 different school operators across the country. There is no standard recipe to a Transcend project. The organisation approaches each partnership flexibly, meeting school partners where they are and working together to accelerate breakthroughs. Each project is supported by Transcend’s R&D Engine, which provides insights from learning science, diverse world-class talent, and expertise in change management and design processes to turbocharge lasting change in school design. Funding from Oak will help Transcend develop, launch, sustain and ultimately scale the innovative school models that result from rigorous and inclusive design processes.
