“Even hesitant teachers found PowerMyLearning to be very easy, linear, and had the ability to quickly put together lessons. Now these teachers are off creating and preparing lessons for next year’s blended learning classrooms.”

– Marcia Kish, an on-site blended learning consultant in a Train-the-Trainer capacity

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What have you accomplished through your Oak-funded programme that you’re most proud to share with your colleagues?

The Blended Instruction Framework for Personalized Learning has been further refined to make explicit the expectation that personalized, blended learning should benefit all learners – including diverse learners. We have also secured the remaining funding required to pilot and implement technology-enhanced professional development with schools both within and outside of PowerMyLearning’s operating regions. We will be sharing professional development playlists on PowerMyLearning Connect by December 31, 2016, and have begun to scale best practices with regard to our professional development offerings.

What’s the most interesting challenge your Oak-funded programme currently faces?

  • How to measure teacher growth in a train-the-trainer model in a way that uses data strictly for teacher growth, and not teacher evaluation.
  • How Professional Learning Communities can be leveraged to support predominantly remote service offerings, which will be helpful in scaling our impact.
  • How effective our professional development playlists will be for teachers who are interested in a self-paced approach.

PowerMyLearning (PML) is a national non-profit organization committed to ensuring that all children are able to power their learning through a combination of technology and the people who matter most to their success – parents and teachers. Its grant is supporting the development of an online teacher professional development resource that builds teachers' skills in creating blended learning opportunities that personalize learning, build student agency to drive their own learning, and promote the academic success of all students, including those who learn differently.

Strengthening Teachers’ Capacity to Personalize their Learning

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

PML launched PowerMyLearning Connect, its free K-12 online learning platform, in 2010. PML Connect provides a constantly growing, well-curated collection of thousands of free educational programs, apps and games, organized by grade level, content area, and Common Core State Standard. In 2011, PML began directly training teachers on how to use its platform to differentiate instruction. In one study of the impact of this training, the number of students with disabilities scoring at or above learning standards improved by 36 per cent and the percentage of all students scoring below standard decreased from 23 per cent to zero. In 2012, PML expanded their teacher training pilot to 10 schools in 4 regions. PML used these pilot sites to develop, evaluate and refine a suite of 25 teacher professional development and coaching tools that effectively support teachers in creating blended learning environments that work well for students, including those who learn differently.

ABOUT THE OAK FUNDED  PROJECT

Through its current Oak grant, PML is poised to expand the reach of its online tools beyond their current regional schools and partners to thousands more teachers. To achieve this reach, PML is curating high-quality digital learning activities as well as sharing some of its teacher professional development resources in PML Connect. It is creating Professional Development Playlists, which sequence digital learning activities and are aligned to PML’s research-based instructional tool, the Blended Instruction Framework for Personalized Learning. All of these materials are provided to teachers free of charge.  In addition, PML is developing technology-enhanced service delivery models, supported by a Premium version of PML Connect that includes a suite of features that further support schools in the creation of personalized learning environments.
