“I live with three kids who struggle, and I THOUGHT I understood. Until I took this simulation [available on Understood.org]. I had no real idea. It left me in TEARS… lots of eye opening for this mom!”

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What have you accomplished through your Oak-funded programme that you’re most proud to share with your colleagues?

Understood reaches more than 1.8 million unique visitors per month, providing reliable, actionable and vital information on learning and attention issues.

What’s the most interesting challenge your Oak-funded programme currently faces?

Understood is currently focused on how to deepen the engagement with our audience. We want to ensure that not only are we reaching all parents of the 1 in 5, but deeply engaging them in a meaningful way that impacts the lives of their children. The thoughtful measurement of that impact and the execution of online and offline engagement strategies are front of mind in 2017.

The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), a pillar in the learning differences and attention issues field, is a trusted source of information and advice for educators, policy makers, people with learning differences, and their parents nationwide. Its grant supports NCLD’s flagship program, Understood.org, which is a free, comprehensive online resource designed to empower parents of children with learning differences ages 3 to 20.

Linking parents of students with learning differences to much-needed resources and online community

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

NCLD’s mission is to improve the lives of children and adults with learning and attention issues by empowering parents and young adults, transforming schools, and advocating for equal rights and opportunities. It is working to create a society in which every individual possesses the academic, social, and emotional skills needed to succeed in school, at work and in life. NCLD advocates for legislation at the federal and state level to protect and support the rights of the 1 in 5 children and adults with learning and attention issues. Through Understood.org, it provides information, resources and community to millions of parents. NCLD will celebrate four decades of impact when it marks its 40th anniversary in 2017.
