CENTER FOR INDIVIDUAL OPPORTUNITY - CIO

Increasing awareness of the “science of the individual” to maximize opportunity for all

The Center for Individual Opportunity (CIO) is a non-profit organisation that aims to make possible a society that understands and nurtures individuality, so that we can transform how each person learns, works, and thrives, and dramatically expand what we can collectively accomplish in the world.  Its grant supports creating the conditions for a social movement around an expanded view of human potential that will motivate the public to demand change, and empower the change makers who supply solutions.  This effort will support the reimagining of learning experiences so that they effectively respond to the jagged learner profiles each student has.

“In all affairs it’s a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on things you have long taken for granted.”

– Bertrand Russell, philosopher

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS /

What have you accomplished through your Oak-funded programme that you’re most proud to share with your colleagues?

We are most proud of the headway we have made on planning a social movement; we have created a blueprint that lays the groundwork for a large-scale social movement that challenges average-based assumptions about human potential.

What’s the most interesting challenge your Oak-funded programme currently faces?

Our most interesting challenge has been staying at the appropriate level of engagement that serves our mission as an organization.  There is so much that needs to be done that it’s hard not to want to engage in all aspects of the work; however, we believe that getting things like personalized learning at scale ultimately requires a dramatic change in the assumptions that the general public has about human potential.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

The CIO, co-founded by Dr. Todd Rose of Harvard University, envisions an educational system that personalizes learning in a way that nurtures the potential of every student. To make personalised learning the rule, rather than the exception, CIO leaders believe that there must be a change in public mindset to understand that designing systems around the concept of “the average” is too limiting. Equally essential is to publicize solutions demonstrating that “the science of the individual” can deliver impactful results.

ABOUT THE OAK FUNDED  PROJECT

The CIO's Oak-funded strategy includes building awareness of the science of the individual's three principles: 1) that each individual has a jagged learning profile with many dimensions that cannot be reduced to a single score; 2) that performance and behaviour cannot be understood independent of the context in which the learner is situated, and 3) that there are always multiple pathways to developmental progress and successful learning. To build this awareness, CIO is communicating through a variety of media and outlets, including Dr. Rose's new book, The End of Average. CIO is partnering with influential national organisations to spotlight areas where these principles are being applied.
